The short version

Deliver the resource you promised, let people skip optional email signup, and distinguish completed sends, raw link opens, and recorded email consent.

Choose one problem and one useful resource

An Instagram lead magnet is a resource offered to people interested in a particular problem: a checklist, template, recipe collection, or guide. Comment automation handles the keyword-to-message handoff. It does not improve a mediocre PDF through the ancient marketing art of putting ‘ultimate’ in the filename.

Define who the resource helps and what they can do after using it. For this worked example, imagine a creator offering a workshop preparation checklist. The post demonstrates one preparation mistake, the caption offers the checklist, and the delivered resource helps prevent that same mistake. That continuity matters more than adding extra steps to make the campaign look sophisticated.

Prepare the download before inviting people to request it

  • Open the exact URL you plan to save, not a nearby editor or preview link.
  • Check that the filename, page title, and resource match the caption's promise.
  • Use a working HTTPS destination if you enable Triggered link tracking.
  • Keep a clear resource title so recipients recognize what they requested later.

Host the resource somewhere recipients can access without your account permissions. Triggered can include a delivery link or file URL; you provide the destination. Test it signed out and on a phone. A document behind an owner-only login is not a lead magnet. It is a well-designed locked door.

Decide whether the destination is the file itself or a resource page. If the page asks for another signup, make that clear before the person requests it. Do not promise an immediate free download and then deliver an undisclosed payment requirement. Avoid private access tokens or customer-specific information in a public comment reply.

Connect the caption, keyword, and Ask First question

Create an Instagram comment automation for a specific post and use a distinctive keyword such as WORKSHOPGUIDE. Exact matching makes the first test predictable. The caption should explain the resource and the private message, so the opening question feels expected rather than like an unrelated sales bot has wandered into the room.

Ask First sends an opening question and waits for a Yes response before continuing. The initial private reply alone does not open an ongoing messaging window. A relevant quick-reply interaction is needed; an ordinary website-link click is not the same thing. Do not describe this as messaging every new follower, which is a different trigger and is not provided by this workflow.

A matched caption and opening question

Caption: Comment WORKSHOPGUIDE and I will message you about the free preparation checklist. Opening question: Want the workshop preparation checklist? Buttons: Yes, send it / Not now.

Test the choices, not just the happy path

  1. Have a different account leave a fresh matching comment on the selected post. Confirm the opening question and optional public response, including Message Requests.
  2. Choose Yes, complete the email question with a valid address in a controlled test, and verify the correct resource arrives and the consent entry is recorded.
  3. Run a separate fresh test that replies SKIP. Verify the resource still arrives and that no email signup is recorded for that path.
  4. Test No separately and confirm that it does not deliver the final content. Also check that a nonmatching comment does not start the campaign.
  5. Open the actual delivered link while signed out of your hosting account. Review Activity for the individual stages, not just the campaign's total counter.

Use a controlled test address and separate test entries when interpreting results. Investigate failed receipts before inviting the wider audience to repeat them. A campaign deserves a rehearsal, not a motivational speech delivered to the Save button.

Measure the handoff before declaring a funnel victory

Keep completed sends, recorded link opens, and opted-in email entries separate. A completed send is not a read. Raw tracked opens may include automated previews and are not verified unique human visitors. An email consent entry is not automatically a qualified lead or a purchase. Confirm sales in the destination's actual transaction records rather than asking a click counter to develop an imagination.

Start with one campaign and review where people stop: the caption, opening question, optional email request, or destination. Improve one part at a time. An optional no-click reminder can be configured for an eligible engaged conversation while the messaging window remains open, but it is not necessary for the first test. A clear promise and accessible resource come first. The tiny marketing orchestra can arrive later.
